Ernst and Young has been shortlisted in two categories at the Business in the Community (BITC) Awards for Excellence 2012.

The awards recognise the role that business plays in local communities by awarding organisations for the impact and innovation of their responsible business programmes across a number of categories.

The professional services firm was shortlisted in the Ways2work category for its approach to sustainable travel by supporting flexible working and promoting active travel options, such as bikes-for-work schemes.

It was also shortlisted in the education category for the ongoing success of its school partnership scheme. By working in partnership with 20 schools, Ernst and Young help groups of students through programmes that provide academic support, employability skills, business awareness and work experience.

Steve Varley, UK managing partner at Ernst and Young, said: "We are proud to receive this accolade in recognition of our approach to flexible working and sustainable travel.

“Corporate responsibility and sustainability are integral to our business strategy, our values and our day-to-day operations.

“This reflects our commitment to working and travelling in ways that benefit our people and minimise our environmental impact while continuing to deliver exceptional service to our clients.”

Stephen Howard, chief executive at BITC, added: “There has never been a better time to showcase that business can be a force for good, for the mutual benefit of both organisations and the communities in which they operate.

“Our awards are all about celebrating responsible business and Ernst and Young has demonstrated that it can have a positive impact on society and employees without losing focus on their business.”
