Retailer Co-op has launched a campaign which champions communities and diversity, alongside a new social mobility, inclusion and belonging strategy.
The employer’s social mobility, inclusion and belonging strategy is aimed at building a more inclusive workplace for staff as part of its dedication to diversity through tangible actions and support. It aims to help attract and retain diverse talent, enhance innovation and performance through diverse perspectives, build reputation and social value, and foster a culture of inclusion and belonging.
As part of the strategy, Co-op plans to increase the representation of ethnic minority staff in senior leadership from 9% to 11% by the end of 2027, and from 8% to 10% by the end of 2027, achieving at least 13% by 2030.
Co-op will additionally hold education events with its learning community ‘inclusion starts with I’, which focuses on education, awareness, empathy and taking action, and continue to roll out its behavioural framework and employee code to set clear standards of expected behaviours.

It will also mandate training on tackling bullying, harassment and discrimination to all staff and encourage them to report incidents, and launch an inclusive leadership programme to help upskill leaders. It will also hold a session to discuss its ongoing commitment to being an anti-racist organisation.
Kenyatte Nelson, chief customer and membership officer at Co-op, said: “This National Inclusion Week, we’re championing the differences that make us and our communities stronger. This campaign proudly reinforces our co-operative values of equality and solidarity. We’re committed to fostering an environment where everyone feels valued and respected. Through this work we hope to inspire others to embrace diversity and work collectively towards a more inclusive society. Together, we can create lasting impact and build stronger, more connected communities.”
