Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club is to award its 1,080 permanent and match-day staff bonuses of up to 20%.

The club’s 280 permanent staff and 800 match-day employees will all be awarded a guaranteed 10% bonus in recognition of employees’ support and hard work that helped the Brighton and Hove Albion football team get promoted from the Championship into the Premier League.

Permanent employees can also gain an additional 10% bonus based on performance, taking the total bonus available up to 20% for some staff.

The bonus payments will be delivered with employee pay in May and July.

The bonus scheme, which was introduced in August 2015 for the start of the 2015-2016 football season, was designed to unite and motivate staff in support of the club’s players and their bid to gain promotion to the Premier League.

The bonus scheme is part of a wider motivation strategy, created to drive high performance across the club. The strategy includes providing free food for staff to enable them to maintain good health and perform at a higher level, whatever their job role.

The club is also looking to offer wellbeing initiatives to support this strategy in the future, such as meditation classes, health weeks, and campaigns to encourage staff to increase their physical activity levels.

Rose Read, head of HR at Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club, said: “Everybody across the club and [Albion in the Community], our charity, are immensely proud of what the club has achieved. Our staff right across the club worked incredibly hard last season and it was devastating to miss out on promotion by a whisker. However, the next day after losing out in the play-offs, I came into the office and the drive and determination of the staff to come back this season and go for it again was absolutely overwhelming.

"Right across the club, we couldn’t wait for the fixture list to come out so we could go for promotion again. There is no greater motivation than that and it set the tone for the 2017-18 season. One of our values is ‘aim high, never give up’ and I can’t think of a better example than the way our staff have performed this year”.
