Boots has reduced absence levels by awarding an Advantage Card up to the value of £50 to employees with 100% attendance over the past year.
The vouchers were sent to 26,000 employees from the retailer's 60,000-strong UK workforce. The value of the vouchers were pro-rated for part-time staff.
The one-off recognition scheme, which was introduced in April 2009, resulted in Boots’ monthly moving annual total for absence falling from 3.84% that month to 3.42% in November 2009. In April 2010, absence levels had reduced further to 3.13%.
Kathryn Fletcher, senior reward analyst at Boots, said: “It is a creative way to recognise people who have good attendance and has been extremely well received by the business.
“Feedback from our employee forums on our 100% attendance award was very positive and a high proportion of the vouchers were redeemed, with the added benefit of the extra sales generated as employees spent them in our shops.
“Absence is an issue for all retailers so it is something we did as part of a wider programme to look at absence and rewarding people who have been present for the entire year.”
