Average advertised salaries in London fell by 3.9% between December 2015 and December 2016 to reach £38,449, according to research by Adzuna.

Its UK job market report: January 2017, which uses data collected from job vacancies advertised online in the UK, also found that average advertised salaries in the UK fell by 3% between December 2015 and December 2016 to reach £32,323.

Between November 2016 and December 2016, average advertised salaries in the UK rose by 0.3%.

After London, the south east of England recorded the highest average advertised salary in December 2016 at £31,115, although this represents a decline of 3.3% year on year.

In Scotland, average advertised salaries fell by 2.2% between December 2015 and December 2016 to reach £30,606. Salaries in Northern Ireland dropped by 1.1% to £28,768, and average advertised salaries increased by 0.5% in Wales to reach @29,438.

Doug Monro, co-founder at Adzuna, said: “The jobs market has calmed following the hectic festive period. Despite total advertised vacancies falling slightly as [organisations] pause for breath before renewed recruitment pushes in January, salaries have finally begun to trend upwards. Although it may be slightly too early to celebrate the increase, it is a solid indication that the market is adapting and continuing to evolve.

“With fewer vacancies and higher salaries, jobseekers may have to be slightly more selective when choosing their next step as the amount of choice jobseekers face in the market seems to be more restricted as competition per vacancy has increased."
