Supermarket Aldi is to increase its minimum rate of pay for UK staff to £8.53 an hour from 1 February 2017.
Minimum pay for employees in London will rise to £9.75 an hour, effective from the beginning of February.
The new rates of pay will benefit 3,356 Aldi employees in the UK.
The new rates of pay will exceed the UK voluntary living wage rate, which currently stands at £8.45 an hour. The London living wage rate recommended by the Living Wage Foundation is £9.75 an hour.
Matthew Barnes (pictured), chief executive officer at Aldi UK, said: “We recognise the valuable contribution that our thousands of store employees make every day. Their dedication and commitment is a key reason why Aldi is the UK’s fastest-growing supermarket.
“We remain committed to being the best supermarket employer in Britain. This means that we will continue to provide employees with rates of pay and benefits that are the highest in the supermarket sector.”
