The search engine received a 4.4 out of 5 rating, closely followed by John Lewis, which received a 4.3 rating.

The results are based solely on input from employees who anonymously and voluntarily provide feedback via a survey of staff. The survey covers job satisfaction, work environment, company culture and senior leadership.

The awards ceremony highlighted organisations in three categories: 50 best places to work - US (recognising employers with 1,000 or more employees), 50 best small & medium companies to work for - US (recognising employers with fewer than 1,000 employees) and new for 2015, the 25 best places to work UK.

Robert Hohman, chief executive officer and co-founder of Glassdoor, said: “It is this type of authentic feedback that helps others find jobs and organisations they love, and allows us to honour employers who stand out for their efforts in providing an enjoyable work environment and culture.”
