Something for the weekend: If you have ever fancied working for royalty and have a flair for languages, then this role might just be perfect for you.

The Prince and Princess of Wales have announced that they are looking to hire a London-based assistant private secretary as part of their team at Kensington Palace, but the successful candidate will need to possess a particular skill.

As the royal couple are the Prince and Princess of Wales until they become king and queen, they are focusing some of their work on the country to maximise their impact. As a result of this, any prospective candidates will need to be able to speak and write conversational Welsh at a minimum.

The permanent role, which is 37.5 hours per week, will involve planning the duo’s day-to-day engagements across the UK and being part of the on-the-ground team in delivering these, with both domestic and overseas travel to be expected.

The successful applicant will report directly to the couple’s private secretary and work alongside the communications secretaries, the visits and events team, and the diary manager at Kensington Palace. They will also assist the couple in writing speeches, communicating on their behalf with charity and patronages, and delivering written advice.

The job description stated: “This role requires excellent communication and organisational skills, with a proven ability to build productive relationships with a wide range of individuals and institutions. You will have a proactive, hands-on approach while operating in a small and agile team, and a strong understanding of Welsh communities, affairs, government, and business. Conversational Welsh is essential, and fluent Welsh, both written and spoken, is desirable.”

This sounds like a royally good opportunity for any Welsh speakers keen to work with the Prince and Princess! There was no mention of a salary, but hopefully the benefits package is a good one.
