The annual event aims to encourage workers to cycle their commute for just one day to boost active travel and healthier living.

Around 500 organisations representing 800,000 employees, including Tesco’s 300,000 staff, will be encouraged to take part in this year’s event.

The supermarket is offering employees a selfie competition, posts on its Yammer private social network and a three-prize giveaway.

Activities from other employers range from Britain’s Biggest Bike Breakfast, which encourages colleagues to offer one another breakfast after cycling to work, bike ‘health’ checks and competitions for staff to win cycling prizes.

A spokesperson from Tesco said: “We know that many of our colleagues enjoy cycling to work and the benefits it brings, especially during the summer months.

“We’re supporting Cycle to Work Day by running a ‘selfie’ competition, and we hope it will encourage lots of our colleagues to give their bike a go. We also support cycling year round through our [bikes-for-work] scheme”.
