Tesco has launched a bikes-for-work scheme for its 300,000 employees.

The retail giant hopes the scheme will encourage employees to change to commuting by bicycle.

Employees can either purchase a bike from one of provider Cyclescheme’s network of independent bike shops, or via the Tesco Direct website. Those who do so via the Tesco Direct site using a staff Privilege card will receive a 10% discount on top of the available tax savings.

Judith Nelson, personnel director for Tesco in the UK and Republic of Ireland, said: “By making it easier and more appealing for our people to live healthier lives, we are using our scale for good to make a positive difference in society.

If 1% of employees take up the bikes-for-work scheme, that could equate to 12,888 car journeys being replaced by cycle journeys and over 117 tonnes of CO2 offset each month.
