The government has launched an action plan to help employers improve opportunities for women in the workplace.

The measures, which were announced last month by Ruth Kelly, minister of communities and local government, include an initiative whereby the government will work with employers to develop programmes to help women returning to work. These will include facilitating access to part-time work, flexible working and setting up a job-share register.

The action plan also proposes to introduce equality representatives to help increase employees' awareness of their flexible working rights and discrimination issues.

The government has committed GBP500,000 to a fund to encourage employers to increase the number of part-time senior and professional roles.
