Employers should be able to call on group risk providers to deliver benefits that meet the needs of their workforce, rather than accepting off-the-shelf propositions, according to Tom Gaynor, employee benefits director at MetLife.

Tom Gayor, MetLife

Speaking at Employee Benefits’ group risk debate, sponsored by MetLife, Gaynor said: “I think that for a lot of employers they tend to receive [product] information through their intermediary or from a provider and don’t perhaps challenge that enough.”

He advised employers to sit down with their intermediary and work out exactly what they want to achieve and ask providers to provide that rather than accepting their standard offering.

He went on to explain the importance of employers carefully aligning their group risk benefits with their employees’ health needs, as well as with their organisation’s budget.

Gaynor was one of seven guests to attend the debate, which explored the latest trends and issues in the group risk market.
