EXCLUSIVE: Nick Burns (pictured), chairman of the advisory board at Neyber, will discuss the cause and effect impacts of financial wellbeing issues on employees’ physical and mental health at Employee Benefits Live 2017.

The session, titled ‘How are employees benefitting from financial wellbeing strategies?’, will form part of the financial wellbeing stream on Wednesday 11 October.

In his session, Burns will use both a real-life case study as well as relevant statistics to highlight how employees’ financial wellbeing issues can have a cause and effect reaction on employees’ physical and mental health and wellbeing. For example, financial troubles could impact on an employee’s diet or sleep, as well as cause stress.

Burns will emphasise that while many employers will have created strategies to help support staff with both their physical and mental wellbeing, these measures could be redundant if financial wellbeing is not also addressed.

In the session, Burns will also chair a panel discussion to explore why the employers featured in the panel decided to adopt a wellbeing strategy that includes financial wellbeing. The panelists will speak about how they implemented their wellbeing strategies at their respective organisations, as well as detail the impacts the strategy is therefore having on employees.

The panelists include Naomi Austen, head of reward at Axis, James Devine, executive director of HR and organisation development at Medway NHS Foundation Trust, and Nick Weinel, reward director at DHL and winner of the Best financial wellbeing strategy category at 2017’s Employee Benefits Awards. Heidi Allen, head of research at Neyber, will also feature on the panel.

Burns said: “A lot of people will probably have a physical wellbeing strategy, they’ll probably have a mental wellbeing strategy, but the point I’m looking to try and make at the session is that [while employers] may have those sorted out, it’s cause and effect, and a lot of the [causes] of physical and mental wellbeing problems are financial wellbeing issues.

“It’s time, I think, that people looked much more deeply at financial wellbeing and the effect that financial wellbeing is having on [physical and mental wellbeing].”

Employee Benefits Live 2017 will take place on Tuesday 10 and Wednesday 11 October at Olympia National, London.
