A number of well known charities have clubbed together to get cheaper company car deals.

The Charities' Consortium, led by Barnardo's, has signed a three year deal with Vauxhall Motors to supply 3,000 new vehicles.

Terry Loizou, corporate transport and insurance manager at Barnardo's, went out to tender for the deal, which allows 14 different charities enlarged economies of scale in bulk buying arrangements.

He said the charities will be using a variety of different funding methods from outright purchase to contract hire, but will be comprising mainly of diesel Corsas and Astras.

He added that while it was important for the charities to be environmentally friendly, the fact that Vauxhall was able to provide an effective way of VAT invoicing was also important, because the charities are unable to recover VAT.

Other charities involved in the consortium include Help the Aged, Prince's Trust, RSPB, British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research, and the Wildlife Trust.
