The Miles Consultancy has launched a legal support service for company car drivers. Its TMC Driver Protect product offers drivers 24-hour telephone support from qualified solicitors in the event of a road accident, and legal representation should the matter be taken to court.

Through the telephone helpline, solicitors will be able to advise on matters such as the wording used in police statements. Drivers need to take care with phrasing, as in many cases, using words such as 'swerve' and phrases such as 'slammed on the brakes' are more likely to incriminate them.

However, it is the 24-hour helpline that will be of most use to drivers, as solicitors will be able to offer much-needed advice around police involvement and accidents.

Paul Jackson, managing director at The Miles Consultancy, said: "The key here is [often about] wording, and a solicitor can advise the driver on what to say. Getting it right at this moment can mean avoiding court time and driving courses which means taking time off work." TMC Driver Protect is priced at £25 per employee per year.
