More than half (60%) of fleet managers believe the best single way to reduce cost and under-performance is to reduce the number of unnecessary miles driven.
A survey by Trimble MRM, the supplier of corporate in-vehicle telematics technology, which polled 300 fleet managers, also found 85% of respondents believe using fuel more economically is their biggest challenge.
The survey also revealed more than half of respondents regard driver health and safety as an increasingly important challenge, with vehicle tracking technology becoming central to their management of this issue.
Andrew Yeoman, managing director of Trimble MRM Europe, said: “By accuractely locating drivers and vehicles, fleet managers can optimise who handles each job.
“This may sound like an obvious use of technology but our survey revealed many managers think the equipment they are using is not fit for purpose.
“Companies should be taking every step necessary to ensure economic stability and fleet managers have a great opportunity to make the most of the latest telematics equipment available to allow them to do this."
