More than a third (38%) of respondents believe that low morale in the workplace is a cause of stress at work, according to research by CV Library.
Its survey of 1,200 UK employees also found that more than half (53%) of respondents feel that stress is an issue in the organisation they work for.
The research also found:
- 62% believe their employer looks down on staff who are stressed.
- 57% feel their manager does not offer support to help them manage workplace stress.
- Two thirds (66%) of respondents cite bad management as the main cause of stress at work, 34% believe heavy workloads are the key cause of workplace stress, and 29% feel long working hours are the main cause.
- More than a quarter (26%) of respondents name poor work-life balance as the biggest cause of workplace stress.
- 89% of respondents think that susceptibility to stress at work can impact career progression.
Lee Biggins (pictured), founder and managing director at CV Library, said: “As a nation, we are battling with heavier workloads and longer working hours and this is resulting in a poor work-life balance for many. While it can be difficult to take a step back from work, especially with an increasing amount of technology at our fingertips, creating a balance between our professional and personal lives is important.
“For employers, high stress levels not only impact overall productivity, but can also place organisations in a compromising position, as workers under a great amount of strain are more likely to turn on their heels and look for a better working environment elsewhere. This makes it more important than ever for management teams to take on the responsibility for keeping their staff happy and productive in the workplace and help to alleviate some of the pressures that their employees are facing.”
