Stephenson Harwood has launched a flexible benefits scheme in a bid to make its benefits package more competitive in the marketplace.

The move comes a month after the law firm implemented total reward statements and a voluntary benefits scheme. It has also introduced salary sacrifice around childcare vouchers, bikes for work and pension contributions for staff.

The flex scheme enables 350 employees to trade up or down on benefits such as life cover, Bupa private medical insurance, income protection and holidays. The firm's 100 partners are not eligible to join the flexible benefits scheme.

Jeff Marlow, director of HR and training for Stephenson Harwood, said: "Employees can access the flex scheme at home or at work through a website. The main site is password protected and takes you through to your own section where you get the total reward statement and then, depending on your status, it shows you what you can and cannot do."

The company's revamp of its benefits package followed a review of its remuneration package. "Traditionally, there isn't a focus on benefits in the legal sector, but, increasingly, the profession is changing and people are looking at their remuneration strategy," said Marlow.

Jardine Lloyd Thompson Benefits Solutions provided the flex scheme and total reward statements and helped select voluntary discounts providers.
