EXCLUSIVE: Southern Water has tripled take up of its bikes-for-work scheme since it re-launched the benefit in May.

Around 100 employees have taken up the scheme, up from 33 staff who signed up for the scheme in 2013.

The scheme, which is provided by P&MM, has been re-launched as part of the utilities organisation’s 2014 focus on employee wellbeing.

Suzanne Gregory, reward manager at Southern Water, said: “The scheme fits really well with our environmental policy, engagement with our employees and the wellbeing programme that we are working on this year.

“It is a good way to promote wellbeing, to get employees to start thinking about alternative ways to travel to work.”

The new wellbeing programme also includes a wellbeing calendar, which will highlight a different aspect of staff wellbeing each month.

Gregory added: “We’re doing a pedometer challenge this month. Employees wear pedometers and count how many steps they take. It’s done within small teams, just getting people to think about taking the stairs rather than the lift.”

The bikes-for-work scheme was communicated to staff using employee briefings, roadshows at several of Southern Water’s offices, emails, posters, internal newsletters and the organisation’s intranet site.
