Punch Taverns is to reward staff working in its managed pubs for environmentally-friendly behaviour that helps to reduce the firm's carbon footprint.
The firm will use its existing recognition scheme to reward staff, in its 800 pubs managed by its Spirit Group division, for environmentally-friendly acts with scratch cards that have prize values of between £25 and £1,500. Cash lump sums of up to £500 will also be given to pub managers who make outstanding contributions to reduce the firm's carbon footprint. If pub managers are successful in reducing utility bills this could result in increased bonuses, which are related to business profitability. Spirit has a target to reduce its carbon footprint by 17%.
Managers have attended workshops to learn about energy-efficient business practices and how to prepare energy reduction plans for their pubs. Metering systems to record water, electricity and gas consumption have also been installed in managed pubs to help them identify where savings can be made.
Anthony York, head of reward at Punch Taverns, explained: "We are doing what we can to embed carbon management into the way we do business."
