More than four-fifths (86%) of respondents cite pay as the most important aspect of their job, according to research by Paymentsense.

Its survey of 2,000 UK participants also found that 79% of respondents feel that having 20 or more holiday days is most important when it comes to their job.

The research also found:

  • 72% of respondents believe it is important to have a good workplace pension scheme.
  • 34% of respondents say that having a good maternity scheme is important to them so that they are covered financially when they decide to have a child, and 25% feel that childcare schemes are important to provide financial security when deciding to have a family.
  • 32% of respondents want the opportunity to work flexibly.
  • 65% of respondents who have reached their career peak feel that a well-paid salary is important, compared to 20 or more annual holiday days (47%), and opportunities to progress (5%).

Guy Moreve (pictured), head of marketing at Paymentsense, said: “Although money is the biggest motivator, it is shocking to see how many Brits choose money over passion when it comes to working. Employers have a certain amount of responsibility for the motivation and wellbeing of the workforce and for a team to function to their best of its ability, all members must be fully engaged and committed.

“Employees losing their motivation or passion for their role can be detrimental to business, therefore, employers are advised to really listen and respond to employees’ needs to ensure high levels of engagement throughout [their organisation]. Spotting the warning signs of a disengaged employee early and addressing them quickly can help encourage retention.”
