Almost three-quarters (68%) of respondents reported unreasonable levels of stress when their working hours were inflexible, according to research by the Kenexa High Performance Institute (KHPI).

Its WorkTrends report also found that a lack of flexible working opportunities has an impact on employees’ intentions to leave employers.

More than half (59%) of respondents with inflexible working schedules said they were looking to leave in the next 12 months, compared to 22% of respondents with flexible working opportunities.

Rena Rasch, research director at KHPI, said: “Stress is associated with a wide range of health problems, which can increase absenteeism and reduce an employee’s ability to focus.

“Flexing work schedules should be possible in the vast majority of cases, particularly with the technology we have today to keep in touch.”
