Between ages 61 and 65 is the most popular age bracket in which employees expect to retire, regardless of how much they earn.
More than 40% of respondents said they expected to retire between age 61 and 65, according to the Attitudes to Work survey by IFF Research.
This attitude emerges regardless of gender, income, profession or whether they work in the public or private sector.
For example, 44% of workers who earn up to £25,000 a year expect to retire at this time of life, compared with 35% of those who earn more than £25,000. A further 30% of this group of higher earners expect to retire between 50 and 60, compared with about 25% of those in the lower salary range.
Machine operatives and those in 'elementary occupations' were the biggest group (60%) who expected to retire between the age of 61 and 65, while only 40% managers and senior officials expected to do so. Only 3% of those under aged 35 expected to work beyond 70.
