Enterprise Rent-A-Car has introduced a cycle-to-work scheme and discounted retail vouchers for its 2,000 full-time staff.

Through the cycle-to-work scheme, staff can save 40% on the price of their chosen bike if they are a basic-rate taxpayer and 49% if they are a higher-rate taxpayer.

Donna Miller, HR director for Europe, said Enterprise had chosen to waive the fee staff would normally be charged for the bike at the end of the lease period. “We decided we only want to rent cars - we do not want to do bikes too.”

The retail vouchers, meanwhile, give staff discounts of between 1% and 9% at stores such as Argos, Asda, House of Fraser, John Lewis, Gap and Thomas Cook.

Miller said there had been an encouraging initial take-up of both schemes. “We are going to do another communications campaign in six months to capture new people as sometimes people do not get around to registering,” she said. “But as others get involved with it and start their shopping and talking about it, we will get a higher take-up.”

Both schemes are provided by Grass Roots, with Halfords also supplying bikes for the cycle-to-work scheme.
