Global health services organisation Cigna has acquired insurance business Zurich Insurance Middle East.

The acquisition, which was completed in June 2017, will enable Cigna to expand its operations across the United Arab Emirates, Lebanon, Kuwait, and Oman.

The acquisition aims to support and enhance Cigna's current operations in the Middle East, including additional personalised products, and access to customer support, multilingual call centres, specialised clinical services, and medical and healthcare professionals and facilities worldwide.

The new entity will be referred to as Zurich Insurance Middle East, a Cigna-owned company. The organisation will be renamed in line with the Cigna brand once formalities relating to the acquisition have been completed.

Arthur Cozad has been appointed chief executive officer for the Middle East market. Cozad was previously chief executive officer at Cigna Taiwan.

Jason Sadler (pictured), president at Cigna International Markets, said: “Cigna has enjoyed a strong presence in the Middle East for more than 15 years through our local partners. Today, we mark a significant new phase of our journey and commitment to the region. Cigna aims to improve the health, wellbeing and sense of security of our regional customers by providing full access to our global expertise and wide range of specialised healthcare benefits, products and wellness programmes.”
