Conservative member of Parliament (MP) Esther McVey has been appointed as the new secretary of state for work and pensions.
McVey, who has been the MP for Tatton since June 2017, commenced her new role in January 2018 after the former minister, David Gauke, was appointed the secretary of state for justice and Lord Chancellor.
McVey is the fifth MP to hold this office since 2016, following Iain Duncan Smith, Stephen Crabb, Damian Green and David Gauke.
From November 2017, McVey had been acting as treasurer of the HM household, deputy chief whip, House of Commons. Prior to that, she was minister of state, department for work and pensions, cabinet between July 2014 and March 2015, minister of state, department for work and pensions between October 2013 and July 2014, and parliamentary under-secretary, department for work and pensions between September 2012 and October 2013.
McVey has also participated in select committees, such as the selection committee from November 2017 and the home affairs committee between September 2017 and December 2017.
