Employees’ relationship with their colleagues is 23% more connected to happiness at work than their relationship with their line manager, according to research by TinyPulse.

Its 2013 Employee engagement survey, which analysed 40,000 responses from more than 300 organisations, found that 36% of respondents provide peer-to-peer recognition schemes.

The research also found:

  • Only 42% of respondents know their organisation’s vision, mission and values.
  • 18% of respondents said employers that do not promote employee suggestions are at an innovation disadvantage.
  • 82% of respondents said their manager has clearly outlined their role and responsibility.

David Niu, founder and chief executive officer of TinyPulse, said: “Not only are capital markets demanding transparency, employees want the same from their leadership.

“The cost of improving transparency is almost zero, and we are seeing an increasing number of organisations using transparency as an advantage when attracting and retaining top talent.

“This shows that who you work with is becoming more important than who you work for. We often think of employee happiness and satisfaction as being manager driven but now, as the workplace becomes more cross-matrixed, collaborative and ‘bottom-up’, the importance of colleague relationships continues to grow.”
