Virgin Atlantic is to freeze pay for thousands of staff this year.

A statement from Virgin Atlantic attributed its decision to suspend salary increases to external challenges.

It stated: “The UK airline industry has faced continued challenges over the past year – this is made worse by government imposed taxes on passengers traveling through the UK, alongside some of the most expensive airport charges in the world.

“Fuel is undeniably a fixed cost that every airline has to manage. Virgin Atlantic has planned a fleet restructure which includes leaner, cleaner aircraft to replace the older four-engine models that are far more costly to operate.

“The airline has also made the decision to suspend salary increases for this financial year.”
