With World Cup fever still gripping some nations, employers in these regions will no doubt be keeping a close eye on employees’ attendance levels, particularly during important fixtures.
But Americans fans wishing to watch yesterday’s group match, which kicked off at midday EST (5pm BST), may have been helped in their bid to watch the match by US head coach Jurgen Klinsmann.
He penned a cheeky note to help American employees convince their employer they need time off, despite the possibility of reduced productivity in the workplace.
In the note, Klinsmann addressed employers, asking them to forgive their staff for their absence and pleading with them to act as good leaders.
The letter reads: “I understand that this absence may reduce the productivity of your workplace, but I can assure you that it is for an important cause.
“The #USMNT [US Men’s National Team] has a critical World Cup game versus Germany and we will need the full support of the nation if we are to advance to the next round.
“By the way, you should act like a good leader and take the day off as well. Go USA!”
That might be one way to boost staff motivation in the US. Sadly, in the Employee Benefits office, motivation and celebrations did not last very long for England …
