Unum has changed its approach to medical underwriting for group income protection schemes and will now consider providing cover for employees who have had a heart attack prior to the insurance being taken out. It will also begin to offer cover for people who have suffered from serious illnesses, such as cancer, paraplegia and diabetes. The move has been made possible by Unum's use of biopsychosocial modelling in its underwriting and application processes, enabling it to identify the likelihood of long-term sickness among individuals.
