The University of Wales Institute, Cardiff has introduced health checks and a series of workplace wellness events as part of a new health and wellbeing strategy.
Employees will be given the chance to have regular health MOTs including blood pressure and cholesterol tests. Participating staff will also be given advice on how to achieve healthier lifestyles.
The new strategy was launched in October following a successful pilot period of events held in the summer, during which staff were offered cycling, dodgeball and pilates sessions.
Chris Deacy, HR manager (occupational health and safety), said: "We pulled a health strategy together and were able to identify some strategic goals. One of these was to raise awareness of health and wellbeing provisions, and [another was] to provide support mechanisms for staff to improve their health and lifestyle."
The university will continue to develop its existing occupational health provision which consists of on-site nurses and a physiotherapy service, as well as a counselling and doctor-run medical service.
A specially-convened steering group makes the occupational health decisions that underpin the university's health strategy. This group is formed by representatives from both the university and its union.
