Universal Music has laid out plans to promote health and wellbeing for its 1,000 staff throughout 2007.

In January, employees will be asked to take part in a 'Fitbug' scheme, where staff wear pedometers throughout the day. The data that is collected will be loaded into a website which can give staff an indication of the total calories they have lost, energy expenditure, and advice on diet and exercise.

In March, this will be followed with a week dedicated to health and safety awareness, which will involve classes and seminars ranging from how to give up smoking to hearing tests, free massages and health consultations for any employees who wish to take part.

Taking responsibility for employee health is something that the music firm takes seriously. Michael Pye, director of HR operations, said that employers should help staff to improve their fitness.

"There is responsibility on both sides, but the employer must lead the way, and then hopefully people will take on board what we are trying to achieve," he added.

Today, the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence published guidelines for employers, which offers advice around keeping employees healthy at work.
