The Transport and General Workers' Union (TGWU), has reacted angrily to the suggestion that large pub chains such as JD Wetherspoon will not be offering any perks to staff who will work longer and more unsociable hours, under the new drink licensing laws. The union has suggested that pub chains offer a free taxi ride home for staff working through the night or a wage that aligns itself with other night working industries. But both JD Wetherspoon and Greene King have made it clear to Employee Benefits that they do not intend to offer staff any extra benefits for working extended hours as a consequence of the new licensing laws. Rose Keeping, regional industrial organiser for TGWU, said: "It is the responsibility of companies to make provisions for their staff in the form of pay and conditions, if they expect them to work longer and more unsociable hours." When the licensing laws were at proposal stage, TGWU representatives had a bid for pay to reflect the timing of the shift, as is customary in the retail sector.
