Each week one in ten British workers are fitting in a week of unpaid overtime into the working week, according to research by Travelodge.

The study found that the cost of this overtime is £157 billion and it is leading to stress in the workforce, with 66% of respondents saying their stress levels are rising on a regular basis and 31% are finding it difficult to get through an average week.

The research also found:

  • 37% are forgoing a long holiday and instead opting for a series of one night breaks (nightcation).
  • 40% of workers have to regularly work at home in the evenings and a third are putting in extra hours over the weekend.
  • One in five respondents said they check their emails as soon as they wake up and 13% wake up at night to check incoming emails.
