In 2026, employers can no longer rely on traditional benefits. Health insurance and a great coffee machine won’t give you the competitive edge needed to attract top talent. But that doesn’t mean your benefits offering has to be endless. Instead, your choices should add meaningful value that clearly sets you apart.
As employee values and needs have evolved - with flexibility, eco-consciousness, and inclusion taking centre stage - employers have had to think outside the box to attract top talent. In response, some have introduced unexpected and imaginative innovations.
Here are some of the most unique employee benefits, and why they’re proving to be so effective:
Bringing nature into the office
Some employers are bringing nature into the workplace in order to boost sustainability initiatives, biodiversity and morale.
These ideas range from adding greenery - such as vertical gardens, indoor trees and office herbs - to increasing natural light with additional windows and smart lighting, as well as introducing water or sound features to reduce noise and create a calmer environment.
One really unique trend is the installation of bee hives - whether on office rooftops, in courtyards or the car park. Employers from Manchester to Milton Keynes and London have started working with organisations that can install hives outside their office building to reconnect workers with nature in an era of burnout and stress. Teams experiencing the trend have reported that the bees create a source of ‘camaraderie’, arguing that nature-based experiences ‘feel refreshingly purposeful’ and ‘quite radical’.
Who knew that team bonding sessions just needed a bit of extra buzz and some honey?
Sleep support programmes
Many of the most innovative employers are recognising how important sleep is to their workforce’s productivity. When employees don’t have a good night’s rest, it often shows in their performance. So some are incorporating sleep into their offering.
By that, we don’t mean mid-day naps (although that could also work). Instead, some organisations offer sleep support programmes, tailored to helping employees get more rest.
For example, one employee benefit provider’s programme incorporates a number of strategies to address sleep-related issues impacting wellbeing and absenteeism. These include employee sleep training, which helps staff understand how sleep works and how to improve it; sleep workshops designed to embed healthy attitudes towards rest across the organisation; and sleep-friendly HR policy guidance to support those more prone to sleep disruption, such as employees going through menopause, those who are pregnant, or those working night shifts.
When employees get more sleep, their productivity thrives. A well-rested workforce is a resilient workforce after all!
Pets as part of the family
For many employees, pets have become an integral part of the family. And while many organisations offer pet insurance, some employers are taking further steps for our fluffy friends.
Numerous businesses have encouraged staff to bring in their pets, or have a dedicated office dog (usually owned by someone in the workforce) to boost wellbeing, reduce stress and improve workplace morale. For example, at Amazon’s Seattle HQ, more than 2000 employees have registered their pets so they can take them to work - with reception desks stocked with biscuits, water fountains at dog height and an off-leash park!
Even more uniquely, Mars, the chocolate company, has gone the extra mile by extending their family policies to pets. This includes what they call ‘paw-ternity leave’ for new pet owners. How cute!
Reimagining social benefits
Workplace socialisation is evolving too. To ensure not everything is drink-related, and all employees can be included, many organisations are getting creative with workplace socials.
For example, to boost inclusion, one firm hosted a lunchtime screening of Home Alone (in addition to a Christmas party) to make sure employees with families and those who don’t drink could be accommodated in festive celebrations.
Others are swapping parties for experiences, with one boss replacing Christmas booze with The Traitors Live. And it paid off - with multiple employees saying it was the best Christmas party they’d ever had. Who knew strategic deception could be such a bonding exercise?
Salary Sacrifice vehicle schemes
Despite surging popularity, these schemes remain very unique. Why? Because they check so many boxes in one benefit! Let us explain.
Salary sacrifice car schemes work by employees giving up a portion of their pre-tax salary for a brand new vehicle (or pre-loved alternative). Because deductions are made before tax, employees make significant tax savings, while both employers and employees benefit from reduced National Insurance contributions.
But the benefits don’t stop there:
- Reduced vehicle costs - particularly when opting for pre-loved models - make cars accessible to employees who may not have been able to afford them on the high street.
- Using Tusker, cars come with an all-inclusive package, with monthly reductions through salary covering insurance, road tax, servicing, maintenance, MOTs, replacement tyres and RAC breakdown cover. This cuts costs and prevents the need of managing multiple contracts that can create money worries - significantly supporting the financial wellbeing of employees.
- When opting for schemes using only electric or hybrid vehicles, employers can reduce their carbon output, boost sustainability and improve employer branding by demonstrating their environmental efforts.
How many benefits can offer a brand-new car, significant savings, improved mobility, greater inclusion and enhanced sustainability all in one package?
We might be a little biased, but we think that’s pretty hard to beat.
How unique should you be?
As amazing as all these benefits are, uniqueness for the sake of it is unlikely to reap the results you want.
The most attractive employers are those that choose benefits based on their employees’ needs. Listen to them, assess their difficulties and find benefits that can improve their fulfillment, reduce anxiety and boost their productivity.
When employees are happy and feel cared for, your business will profit.
