Three-quarters of employees believe eight or more days is the ideal length of time to take off work as annual leave in order to feel rested and recharged.

However, less than two-thirds (60%) plan to go on holiday for more than a week, according to the Time For a Holiday survey by the Institute of Payroll Professionals (IPP).

The survey also found June is the most popular month to go on holiday, with 18% of respondents saying this was their preferred month to take time off work.

But approximately two-thirds (65%) of staff find it stressful going back to work after being on annual leave.

Lindsay Melvin, chief executive of the IPP, said: "With so many workers predicted to take time off this month, employers should encourage staff to make the most of their annual leave by allocating a few days to rest and relaxation.

"Having adequate time to unwind and enjoy life outside of work could help alleviate some of the stress employees may feel when going back to the office."
