Rushmoor Borough Council has replaced private medical insurance (PMI) with a hybrid PMI and cash plan product in order to cut costs.

It previously paid for PMI for all 40 employees, but made the switch in April due to significantly increasing premium costs.

Under the terms of its new scheme, half of each monthly premium, which is set at a static level, goes towards the costs of running the scheme and the other half into the policyholder’s personal cash funds account, which is left to build up over time and can be used for everyday treatments such as dental and optical care.

Nicola Orchard, head of personnel, said: “It has meant we can offer a truly sustainable benefit for our staff.”

The scheme was supplied by National Friendly, previously known as National Deposit.
