The Grimsby Institute of Further and Higher Education has extended its range of wellbeing initiatives to include an Olympic themed event and to raise awareness of men’s health.

It plans to provide information on men’s health issues, including prostate cancer, to coincide with National Men’s Health Week, which starts on 15 June.

Meanwhile, during the institute’s Olympic-themed event, staff will be able to take part in sports such discus-throwing and tug of war, as well as a number of virtual games using a Nintendo Wii. Peter Barnard, registrar at the institute, said: “At this time it does not seem right to be throwing money about in an overly-generous fashion, particularly when budgets are being squeezed. The team who planned the Olympic event have come up with some imaginative ideas.”

Female health issues are also on the institute’s agenda. Following the high take-up of employee-paid osteoporosis checks earlier this year, the college plans to continue to raise awareness of problems associated with this condition, which affects mostly women. Another event coming up is its annual benefits fair at the end of June.
