Tax and advisory organisation EY has launched an internal guide for staff on gender identity and gender transition to support its transgender community.

The guide, which was developed in consultation with the organisation’s employee network for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people as well as various campaign groups, contains tips and advice targeted at employees who are transitioning between genders, and line managers on how to support LGBT individuals within their teams.

The guide includes descriptions of common terminology, such as non-binary, gender fluid and third gender. It also explains the correct use of pronouns and provides communication tips.

It also aims to educate staff, raise awareness and provide advice on how to help and support employees who are going through gender transition.

Alongside EY's employee network Unity, the guide was developed by groups including Stonewall, trans*formation, Glen and Teni.

Maggie Stilwell, managing partner for talent at EY, UK and Ireland, said: “We want our people to feel they can be themselves at work. When a person works in an inclusive workplace, they have the best opportunity to reach their full potential.

“The guide helps to empower our people to express their individual gender identities with confidence and is another milestone on our mission to be the most inclusive organisation to work for.”

Steve Varley, UK chairman and managing partner at EY, will be speaking on how diversity breeds success on 12 October at Employee Benefits Live 2016
