TUI Travel has achieved up to a threefold return on investment in its occupational health benefits during a 12-month period.

The firm committed to spend over £150,000 on tackling sickness absence by maximising its existing provision and adding new benefits when it began integrating its healthcare benefits in October 2010.

It appointed Healthcare RM to manage long-term sickness absences and provide rehabilitation for a successful return to work. It also liaises with TUI Travel’s other benefits providers, including Legal and General, which supplies group income protection, to ensure maximum use of all perks.

In February, the travel firm, which has 16,000 staff in the UK and Ireland, introduced an employee assistance programme and a telephone line to run alongside its healthcare trust, administered by Axa PPP Healthcare, to support staff around musculoskeletal and mental health problems.

Colin Moore, chairman of TUI Travel Healthcare, said: “It has brought sharper focus on long-term incapacity and the need for it to be tightly managed. Now we are getting in quickly and directing rehabilitation and other factors more effectively.”
