Event summary

As in previous years, the conference will open with two free keynote sessions.

On the first day (April 26) Annette Cox, lecturer in employment studies at Manchester Business School, will highlight the key components that make reward management crucial to a successful business strategy. Cox will demonstrate that low unemployment, an ageing workforce and predictions of a falling national birth rate are going to give HR directors in the UK a real recruitment and retention headache.

On the second day (April 27) Peter Reilly, director of HR Consultancy at the Institute for Employment Studies, will make recommendations on how to develop a modern remuneration package, and warn delegates of some of the potential pitfalls.

Reilly will argue that reward is no longer just about a salary and some core benefits. If an organisation gets their reward strategy wrong it will invariably be left with an unmotivated, unproductive workforce. By attending this session, delegates will gain an insight into what makes a modern remuneration package and how to motivate staff. The judging for the Employee Benefits Awards 2006 has confirmed that the case studies being delivered at the Northern Employee Benefits Exhibition & Conference are pack leaders, with six short-listed schemes.

Gedas will be featured in the session 'Creating an effective flex admin system for your organisation' on 26 April. Flexible benefits schemes from Enviros and 5 Boroughs Partnership NHS Trust and Warrington PCT are included in the session 'Selecting the right benefits for a valued flexible benefits scheme' on 26 April. All three organisations are finalists in the flexible benefits category at the Awards.

Global virtual network operator Vanco is a finalist in the international benefits category, and will be featured in the session 'Flexible benefits from start to finish' on 26 April. Nottingham City Council's voluntary benefits scheme which has been short-listed in the voluntary benefits category of the Awards, will be featured in the session 'How can voluntary benefits compete with the internet?' on 27 April.

Finally, Merseyrail will be included in the session 'Using salary sacrifice to deliver benefits to employees and the business' on 27 April.
