Employers are not reviewing their international benefits often enough, according to research by Jelf International.

Its survey, which questioned nearly 50 employers, found that 42% of respondents have either never reviewed their global benefits or have only done so more than a year ago.

One in five (19%) of respondents have reviewed their international benefits within the past three years, while 9% said it has been more than three years since a review.

The research also found that 93% of respondents would find it useful to have regular country or region-specific updates regarding benefits changes or issues.

Doug Rice (pictured), managing director of Jelf International, said: “We are pleased that a number of employers do review their overseas benefits regularly, but until it’s every employer we won’t be satisfied.

International benefits are very different from domestic benefits. If we take the example of healthcare: in the UK, if an employee doesn’t have private healthcare they can still use the NHS, but often there is no free healthcare abroad.

“In our experience, organisations struggle to access relevant information. When employers have staff in a number of countries it’s tough for them to keep on top of all legislative changes relevant to them.”
