More than half (57%) of employers do not measure payroll efficiency and a third (33%) would not examine payroll costs during spending cuts.

According to The Wage bill and payroll debate research by ADP Employer Services, just 39% of finance professionals measure payroll efficiency compared with 49% in the HR department.

The research also found that a quarter of finance professionals (25%) who are in charge of payroll would rather that it was part of an HR function while 22% of HR staff who deal with payroll would rather it was part of finance.

Just under two-thirds (63%) the 750 organisations surveyed still run their payroll department in house. The main reasons for doing so are keeping control of data (86%), seeing no reason to change (84%) and security concerns (80%)
