Debbie Lovewell, deputy editor at Employee Benefits magazine, won ‘Employee benefits and pensions journalist of the year’ at last night’s Towers Watson’s Excellence in HR Awards.

Over the eight years Lovewell has worked at Employee Benefits she has established herself as a highly regarded journalist in this specialised sector.

Nicola Sullivan, senior reporter at Employee Benefits, received the highly commended award in the ‘HR journalist of the year’ category.

In January 2011, Sullivan was also shortlisted as a ‘Journalist to watch’ at the 2011 Workworld Awards run by the Work Foundation.

The Towers Watson Excellence in HR Awards, now in their sixth year, attracted 71 entries from 43 journalists working across the national, regional and HR trade press.

The judging panel comprised respected figures from the UK's human resources industry including: Mark Wells,group director of HR at Experian; Martyn Fisher, head of group reward at Aviva; Oonagh Ryden, vice president of reward at BT; Theresa Schneider, head of leadership and organisation development at RBS; Stefan Stern,former Financial Times journalist and now director of strategy at Edelman; and Jim Crawley and Chantal Free,both from Towers Watson's talent and reward practice.

Chantal Free, UK head of rewards, talent and communications at Towers Watson, said: "Our panel of judges were impressed with the diversity, quality and engaging style of all the submissions and were particularly amazed by the broad range of media where HR management issues are now covered.

"There have been dramatic changes in the last year, pushing business firmly to the front of newspapers and magazines. All submissions show that in these times HR management issues are both important and high on the corporate agenda."
