Food delivery organisation Deliveroo is trialing a new pay system for 280 London-based couriers, swapping a traditional hourly fee for a payment per delivery structure.

Currently being tested on an employee opt-in basis for 90 days across five areas in London, the pay change involves riders being paid £3.75 per delivery rather than earning a set hourly rate.

Deliveroo are also providing pay guarantees at peak times. This sees couriers working between 11.30am and 2.30pm guaranteed a minimum of £7.50 an hour; those working Monday to Friday between 6.30pm and 9.30pm guaranteed a minimum of £9.37 an hour; and riders who work Saturday and Sunday between 6pm and 10pm will be guaranteed a minimum of £11.25 an hour.

The new payment model has been designed to enhance flexibility for Deliveroo riders.

Writing on Deliveroo’s blog, an organisation spokesperson said: “Ultimately, if this model doesn’t work for our riders, it doesn’t work for us. We will therefore be working hard over the coming weeks to ensure that our riders feel heard and that their contribution to the company’s success is recognised fairly.”
