Danone Dairies is giving employees the opportunity to offset their carbon footprint by funding the planting of trees in the UK through the Woodland Trust.

The new benefit is part of the company's flexible benefits scheme and allows employees to calculate their personal carbon footprint and then sacrifice some of their salary on a monthly basis to fund the planting of enough trees in the UK to offset their footprint.

Employees will be able to access their carbon calculator via the company intranet and donations are made on a salary sacrifice basis so they are tax and national insurance free.

Roadshows explaining the new benefit to staff are being run throughout November with Aon Consulting which is working on the project.

Liz Ellis, human resources director at Danone UK, said: "The average age of our [staff] is between around 28 and 29 [years], so it's about giving people a choice about the ways in which they can help the environment."
