Just under a fifth (19%) of UK staff rate competitive benefits, other than retirement and healthcare perks, as an important factor that would influence their decision to join an organisation.

According to Towers Perrin's Global workforce study, competitive base pay is the most important factor that attracts UK workers to an employer, with almost six-out-of-ten (59%) of respondents stating that this would influence their decision.

Career advancement opportunities rank as the fourth most influential factor, valued by 34% of respondents. But the availability of career opportunities increases in importance among respondents aged between 18 and 34 years. They rated it as the second most influential factor when choosing a job.

Unsurprisingly, respondents aged 55 years or older rated competitive retirement benefits as the fourth most important attraction driver while it was valued tenth by UK staff overall with only 19% of respondents recognising its value when choosing where to work.

Interestingly, four of the top-ten most important factors influencing decisions about where to work were related to work-life balance. Flexible working was the ninth most important factor.
