Carlsberg has added discounted gym membership to its flexible benefits offering and increased take-up levels.

The scheme, which has been in place for three years, was open for enrolment in May.

Almost one-third (31%) of the organisation’s 1,700 staff chose to take up benefits, up from 22% during the 2010 enrolment period.

Julian Daley, reward manager at Carlsberg, said: “We have increased participation year on year for the past three years.”

The top benefits chosen by staff this year were bikes for work, childcare vouchers, give-as-you-earn and holiday purchase.

Other perks offered in the scheme are: a health cash plan, a dental plan, pension, private medical insurance (PMI), shopping vouchers, and travel insurance.

The discounted gym membership is provided by Incorpore. Its addition to the flex scheme follows a series of health and wellbeing days last year with the organisation’s occupational health provider Cigna.

The health and wellbeing days included Water Wellpoint kiosks set up at Carlsberg’s logistics sites to conduct health assessments, provide one-to-one feedback, and offer follow-up help and advice. Daley adds: “The plan is to do another one this year, and keep it up annually.”

The new flex perk and enrolment period was communicated via the organisation’s intranet, through a poster campaign, in briefing packs for line managers, and leaflets sent to employees’ home addresses. This year, Carlsberg scrapped its 24-page benefits booklet for a folded A5 sheet.

Daley says: “It is much more concise, punchy detail. I think that has hit home much better than the weighty booklet.”
