Accor Services has enabled staff to take time out of their working day to volunteer to help remove rubbish from the banks of the River Thames as part of the organisation's bid to encourage staff and suppliers to be more environmentally aware.

A team of 22 employees this week took to a stretch of the river at Battersea Heliport to clear rubbish from the banks. The project was initiated by Accor's environmental focus group, an informal employee committee which meets regularly to discuss how to help the business become more environmentally aware.

Laurent Delmas, managing director at Accor Services, said: "Our social and environmental commitments work on more than one level. As a business, it's clearly important to us but our employees specifically told us that they themselves wanted to have a more immediate impact on their local environment and we wanted to give them the opportunity to make a difference."

The project was organised in conjunction with charity Thames 21.
