However, its Salaries and bonuses: a comprehensive review, human resources research, which surveyed 140 HR professionals, found that less than half (43%) of HR professionals are satisfied with their total remuneration package,

Less than a quarter (24%) of respondents were dissatisfied with their bonus. Half believed that receiving a bonus improves performance, while 40% said it does not.

The research also found:

  • 47% of respondents’ basic salary stayed the same between 2012 and 2013, while 32% saw their salary decrease and 20% had a salary increase.
  • 34% of respondents’ bonuses stayed the same between 2012 and 2013, while 40% of respondents saw their bonus decrease and 26% had a bonus increase.
  • 51% of respondents felt that bonus calculations fairly reflected the value that employees added to the organisation, while 28% did not.
  • 42% of respondents expect bonuses to stay the same in 2014, while 39% expect these to increase and 19% to decrease.

Harry Simons, head of HR recruitment at Carlton Senior Appointments, said: “We were pleased to find that HR [professionals] continue to be less motivated by money, but more so by the role they are undertaking and the variety of tasks or projects at hand.

“Our findings, that under 50% felt that receiving a bonus would improve their performance, supports this.

“The fact that 65% of [respondents] felt their overall remuneration package was fair given the current market conditions despite the fact that, on average, overall remuneration packages dropped marginally, also goes some way to outline market sentiment.”
